1. A day of darkness and of gloom
now settles on our souls
our hearts are torn - oh how we mourn
the dying of hope's coals.

2.  So let our fast be humble now:
no sack cloth and no ash.
Replace dramatic furrowed brows
with simple loving acts.

3.  We will not store our chocolates up
for forty days, then feast,
but let the poor on our food sup
while our pride finds decease.

4.  Come let our fast be humble now
and cry out to the Lord,
for if our hearts in truth are His,
our earnest cry is heard.
